In 16 to 17 centuries, most of Europe was living in system call feudalism a terrible system where king is the absolute power because of Absolutism. In which the king is said to have a divine right to the throne. The divinest divine right monarch of them all Louis XIV led western Europe most powerful kingdom for more than 70 years. In this context, the movie Vatel is a 2000 historical drama directed by Roland Joffé, written by Jeanne Labrun. The cast is Gérard Depardieu, Uma Thurman, Tim Roth, Timothy Spall, Julian Glover and Julian Sands. The film, based on the life of 17th-century French chef François Vatel, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Art Direction. This story tells us that when your love is not accepted by society is better not to serve that society. Using the narrative approach, the film successfully manages to weave a story that is entertaining and romantic mainly due to its relatable and realistic characters, its creative use of music, and plot.
The characters are so realistic because they make logical decisions throughout the movie based on there characters traits. The story is about François Vatel, a real character (played by Gerard Depardieu) who is under constantly increasing pressure to surpass himself in entertaining and feeding the King and his court while coping with backstage and kitchen disasters. We see, he feels trap in this big house being of the king ,just like a bird in trapped in a big cage. We see this when we see birds in 1:41 minutes of the film, one birds feel trapped try to free himself. Birds symbol of how main character feel trap in that house being a servant of king and giving the respect that he deserves. This is also foreshadowing from one late seen one birds is let free and after killing himself. The movie effectively used symbolism and foreshadowing from at beginning of the film. Also, he failed in deathly love with one the mistres. In short, the characters are so realistic because they make logical decisions throughout the movie based on there characters traits.
The movie effectively used music from at the beginning of the film. After the film start with narration perfectly transit to music. The classic music, it was composed Ennio Morricone. There are three sorts of music on this soundtrack release from a film inspired by a royal party that actually happened during the reign of King Louis XIV. There are three sorts of music in the film and in this soundtrack release. There is music that supports the drama, underscoring. This music is given a veneer of Baroque sound and matches the events on screen. The other two sorts of music are "source music," in contrast to the underscoring, which is there strictly for the audience, which is supposed to be music that the characters themselves hear. Some of it is composed by Morricone. Other source music is drawn from actual Baroque composers Jean-Philippe Rameau, Giovanni Paolo Colonna, and Georg Frideric Handel. All the music is very well chosen or imaginatively and aptly composed. The baroque sound adds a fascinating dislocation to the modern way the underscoring music portrays the emotions and tensions of the story. The music itself is very well recorded and well played. Baroque music lovers and film music buffs both should like it. In short,The movie effectively used music from at the beginning of the film. After the film start with narration perfectly transit to music.
Vatel tells the true story of the last days of François Vatel (Gérard Depardieu), the master of ceremonies working for the Prince of Condé (Julian Glover). It seems that in 1671 the king of France, no less than the Sun King (Roi Soleil) Louis XIV (Julian Sands), decided to visit the prince to ask him to be a general in an imminent war against the Dutch. The Sun King did not travel light (he didn’t hunt orcs!), so all of a sudden two thousand people arrive at the Prince’s estate with the intention of staying for three days! As a result, the master of ceremonies Vatel must organize Lucullian banquets and also entertaining events for the court of the king. Needless to say, stress becomes unbearable for the poor inventor of the Chantilly cream (Mr. Vatel really invented that). So unbearable that he will eventually commit suicide.
In conclusion, the movie Vatel is a 2000 historical drama directed by Roland Joffé, written by Jeanne Labrun.
